Neon light - Word Search (lost)

Please note, there is a 3-4 week wait on this as I don’t have a copy ready (the copies in the photos are sold, but it is an edition of 5 and there are 2 left).

Plugs into a normal 3 point plug socket. I recommend they are either hung on chains (supplied) or a block of wood sits within the frame (not supplied). The frames are hollow.

2015

This piece was finished in 2015. At the time, the artist was in a relationship with a person who seemed a little “lost” in life and that is where the idea of using the “lost” theme initially originated, although the piece is far wider in scope than just that one example. The artist then came up with a large list of events, feelings, examples and actions relevant to the overall “lost” concept and created a shortlist which made it to the final piece.

In her typical style, Rebecca covers detail of day to day existence, common experiences and some of her life experiences combined with humour and satire/self deprecating content mocking herself and, often, the work itself, “art” and how we sometimes consume art.

The piece is named “Word Search” as a multiple play on the use of words and the theme of “lost” along with the fact it allows the artist to hide her own specifically pertinent items amongst the many examples. It also plays on the viewer’s experience - many search for, and find, examples that resonate with them too. Each of the pieces Rebecca produces combine to create a continuous diary of events going on in her life and in the wider world at the time they were devised and then created. Word Search seems even more relevant today than it was in 2015.

The placement of the words and juxtaposition is always important. The warm white light was used here to give the piece a more ethereal and gently contemplative feel. Typically, Rebecca uses only (muted) pink lights, white lights, blue and occasionally red. The colour is chosen to fit with the tone of the message and piece. The brushed aluminium background also gives a light reflection here that adds to the feel of the work.

The first copy was initially exhibited at Leontia Gallery in Shoreditch in May 2015. It was then also exhibited at The Other Art Fair (Old Truman Brewery, Brick Lane) in October 2015 as part of Rebecca’s Green Room immersive installation (which is where the confessions were obtained for her piece “The Closet” aka we’ve all got things to hide).

Typically, the process of thinking of, researching, refining and organising background examples can take anything from three months to four years (there are numerous pieces ongoing in 2018 which were started in 2014 and 2015, with the neon words ready from those years) hence why Rebecca often breaks out the date of the neon light itself and the finished piece, so both are covered for copyright purposes.
